| Nuclear Fusion Stocks..?

With he announcement the other day about a breakthrough with Nuclear Fusion, which listed companies could benefit in the future? Whether working with waste, materials or just energy in general, which companies should we be looking at?

There are a few that deal with Uranium but im unaware how much they have to do with Nuclear fusion rather than fission. Whilst I do appreciate the early days of this breakthrough I want to keep my eyes on these companies as I believe the UK will look to the technology in the coming years.

RR. (Rolls Royce) and OXIG (Oxford instruments) are the closest potential stocks I can find. Any more would be greatly appreciated.

Ive since found that Lithium is linked strongly to Nuclear Fusion. However that is not definitive due to the current testing process, trying a whole array of materials and ideas.

I think it will be a very long time in the future before anything comes of Nuclear Fusion, so I wouldn't be worrying about identifying any companies that might benefit. We're probably talking decades.

A neighbour of mine, an academic, sadly widowed, was married to a respected scientist. I was discussing fusion with her and whether it was likely to be commercially viable. She said that her husband used to say “I have worked on nuclear fusion for my entire career. It is at least 50 years away and always will be !”.
I think that is a little bit pessimistic given recent developments, but my guess is that fossil fuels - for which demand remains robust but investment has been greatly reduced - are likely to prove more profitable for investors for at least the next two decades.

As their names suggest, Nuclear Fission is about splitting large atoms which have unstable (radioactive) isotopes into smaller atoms which are stable. I believe that lead is the usual end product. This is the basis of the atom bomb used to end WW2. Nuclear fusion is about joining small atoms together. Hydrogen or its main isotope Deuterium was used to produce the heaviest isotope Tritium in the H bomb tested by UK in the Pacific during the 1950s. Many RN servicemen suffered serious health problems through being forced to watch the explosions. I have a degree in Chemistry which is now over 60 years old perhaps because I was not one of the unlucky ones.

Lithium under fission is one of the best sources of tritium(isotope of hydrogen). Tritium is then typically used for fusion with deuterium (another isotope of hydrogen)

Great discussion.

There is an argument that 'what has been invented, has been invented'. But yes there are still maybe things to gain (Toyota solid state batteries etc - fancy can put small canister into your car in the morning and away we go. But be careful with the accelerator - it on/off, hence some EV cars are faster than F1 (but lets give a thought to the poor oil based rubber tyres - oops sorry spoiler alert, plus fluids, cooling etc sorry sorry - insurance, infrastructure - sorry sorry).

Meanwhile for the grandkids I offer Sprott Uranium Miners UCITS ETF Acc (LON:URNM).

Nuclear was the future in the 50's but probably buried by the oil industry but he ho now arising out of the comics.

I don't see any magic bullets coming around the corner (or out of the ground). Need to do better with what we have (efficiency) and we are doing pretty good at that.

Why ban diesels? - the most highly developed carbon fuel engine on the planet - and engineered to be better cleaner and more efficient than ever before - and still the only viable power source for large vehicles, trains, boats etc. Even Mr Musk uses a rocket to get out of our atmosphere, a very large one.

Ok Mr Germany tarnished the diesel golden goose, but not unpredictably.

So future energy sources outside what we know - don't know - maybe Doomberg will give an investment heads-up. For sure UK politicians will never.

The first blackout in London will be interesting if you like interesting times.

Definitely the future of our energy needs but when this will be an investable reality for the PI is another question entirely, it’s probably worth researching private equity involved with the various startups around the world if it’s something you desperately want to get in on.

You should be warned though, there are competing technologies just now, so it’s still far from clear what design will win out.
